Should I replace just the AC or get a heat pump?

A heat pump can heat and cool and may qualify for federal tax credits, but Michiana winters are cold. Ask specifically about cold-climate ratings and whether dual-fuel (heat pump + gas furnace backup) is wiser than heat-pump-only. If you will keep a good gas furnace and only the AC is failing, a quality standard AC can still be the right planning choice.

What is SEER2 and what rating do I need?

SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2) measures cooling efficiency — higher is better. The federal minimum is 15 SEER2 in the South and 14 SEER2 in the North (as of 2023). My old AC uses R-22 — do I have to replace the whole system?

The existing lineset and indoor coil may not be compatible with modern R-410A refrigerant. In most cases, replacing the entire system (condenser + evaporator coil) is the right call.
